Have you ever saved a post on your blog only to realize later that you accidentally erased a critical paragraph? Ever worked on a blog with multiple authors and needed to keep a log of who changed what and when?
WordPress should store a history of all your posts. You’d get protection from accidental changes, and you’d be able to see a clear timeline of the evolution of each of you posts.
Happily, WordPress is awesome! In the upcoming WordPress 2.6 release, the feature exists and rules!
🙂
And check out the pretty colors!
- Diff of two revisions
- Another Diff
- Post Revisions on the Write Screen
WordPress 2.6 Already? Man these guys seem to be working real fast at building WordPress.
Incredible idea!! I was just thinking of that when I read the trac email. Thank you and kudos!
Awesome! Can’t wait to have this feature!
Pingback: New Feature in WordPress 2.6 | Jeremiah Hoyet
Version Control of WordPress posts? Interesting idea. I tend to write my content outside of WordPress in an app with a basic type of VC, then bring it over. Having the option to do it all with the WP screens themselves would be interesting.
What kind of database footprint would we be looking at for this? For smaller sites, I doubt the extra MySQL space would be an issue if it works the same way as Microsoft Version Control or something like that, but I can see some of the larger blogs (or sites where the author writes really long posts) complaining about their exploding database sizes within a year or so of using Version Control.
Now that is a great feature! i love how wiki has it and it’s a great tool.. even on single author blogs that’s fantastic! Bring on WP 2.6! 😀
On the occasions I’ve needed to do collaborative writing on a blog post I’ve used Google Docs. Its quite a pain to deal with the formatting errors in transferring text back and forth. Its great to hear that we are about to get version control! Any projected release date?
I’ve been waiting for this feature forever. I was about to write my own plugin to do this, but I’m glad the WP folks have anticipated my needs :-). Thank you!
This is really interesting, and more importantly, crucial to blog administrators who would want to keep track on edits. Reminds me of the ‘wiki’ way of editing – I must say that this idea is brilliant. And the Restore link after each edit will really come in handy!
Wow, it is an interesting idea and hope the WP2.6 and WP3.0 will be out soon 🙂

Almost a year between posts! Impressive!
There should be an option somewhere to let the users decide whether to use this feature or not.

Please make widget.php similar to previous versions..
2.5.1 widget settings suck 😦
Wow, this feature is incredible and will be a great tool for multi-author blogs. Thanks!
Inserting a Wiki-style feature into WP is probably a very good move for those writing complicated posts and, as has been written above, for multi-author sites. Hopefully, as Leo says, the ability choose whether this addition is used or not will be built in too, for smaller weblogs where it isn’t necessary and for photoblogs such as mine, and the ability to delete all of the history once the post is completed to satisfaction.

Hey guys my blog works a little bit slow. Slower than livejournal. What’s the problem may be?
I wonder if this function supports other languages except English, for example, Chinese?
its sure come in handy. but i still think its a bad ideas, consume more resource than ever.
I think having a lock options is much better than this new features.
p/s: “accidentally erased a critical paragraph”. literary an accident.
That is a welcome idea. I sure will love the feature.
Most excellent…!
Wicked! If there was one feature that was preventing me from calling WordPress a full-blown CMS, revision management was it.
I’m pretty sure you can get workflow management with plugins already.
Can’t wait

Cool, i like it!
it’s fantastic! thanks wordpress staff :o)
I don’t revise too much on my site… usually just spelling/grammar corrections, but this will still be a nice feature to have available.
Very nice feature, but as someone said before, I’m concerned about database “exploding” after a while. A feature to erase revisions or compact them would be nice, too.

Seriosuly, this sounds awesome!

Woohoo! Best thing I’ve heard all day 🙂
@ChaosKaizer re “lock option”: WordPress already automatically detects if someone is editing a post and puts up a big red warning if another person comes along and tries to edit it. Is that what you meant?
wow, fintastic job!
Can’t wait for this. I’ve been wanting this kind of revision functionality for some time now.
It’s like Wikipedia. I knew it wasn’t a coincidence WordPress and Wikipedia share the WP acronym.
I predict that someone will write a plugin that purges all the previous versions at an adjustable interval after the final version is published, so as to keep the database from a bloated death.
There’s such amazing possibilities in this platform.
Awesomeness.
I accidently deleted a big frickin’ paragraph when I first started using 2.5, and it annoyed the hell out of me.!

i think this features should be place in plugins its sound too much for simple blog.
For those who can’t wait there is already a plugin to do this. I believe its called Revisions and I use it on my version of WordPress which is a few versions old heh.
disabled post revision
wp-config.php
define(WP_POST_REVISIONS, false);
Nice idea

Wow! I always think they’ve gotten all the features anyone could want in a blog system or a CMS and then the developers come up with something like this! Can’t wait.

As long as it doesn’t slow down anything I’m fine with that. But I have a bad feeling about this. It especially worries me as I sit at a rather old computer and the editor already loads very slow.

Sounds nice – but I’d be concerned about database size. Perhaps a compromise: allow multiple revisions, but also allow the old ones to be cleared out at some point (manually or automatically). Also, a global setting would be nice so we don’t have to use it if we don’t want to.
